Prisoner of War
L. Randby,
1945
Stanley Willner's scrap book was begun
after arriving at Changi Prison in 1943. Prisoners were handed sheets of
paper for various personal uses. The POWs had not been stripped of their
art supplies by the Japanese, yet. So, Stanley Willner asked them to
draw some pictures and write down their names. Thus, the scrap book was
begun.
When they were sent up country to the
Kwai, he managed to obtain a scrap of plastic that he was able to wrap
the pages in and bury while in various camps. Discovery of this book
would have cost him his life.
